The TC74HC166AFN is a high-speed CMOS 8-bit parallel-in/serial-out shift register fabricated with silicon gate CMOS technology. It combines the features of both serial and parallel data entry with the capabilities of serial data output. The device operates synchronously and features a shift/load control input (SH/̄LD) that enables either parallel loading or serial shifting.
Applications
- Data multiplexing
- Keyboard encoders
- Remote control transmitters
- Data transmission systems
- Microprocessor interface
Features
- High Speed: tpd = 14 ns (typ) at VCC = 5V
- Low power dissipation: ICC = 4 μA (max) at TA = 25°C
- High noise immunity: VNIH = VNIL = 28% VCC (min)
- Output drive capability: 10 LSTTL loads
- Symmetrical output impedance: |IOH| = IOL = 4 mA (min)

- The device offers both synchronous parallel loading and serial shifting, providing versatile functionality.
Additional Details
When the SH/̄LD input is LOW, the device loads parallel data from the eight parallel inputs (A through H) synchronously with the positive transition of the clock. When SH/̄LD is HIGH, data shifts serially from the serial data input (DS) to the QH output on each positive clock transition. The clock inhibit input (CLK INH) allows the clock signal to be disabled without affecting the data in the register.
The TC74HC166AFN comes in a DIP16 (Dual In-Line Package) and is designed to operate within a broad temperature range, making it suitable for use in a variety of industrial and commercial applications.
