Product Overview: NXP 74F138 1-of-8 Decoder/Demultiplexer
The NXP 74F138 is a high-performance, fast-switching 1-of-8 decoder/demultiplexer designed for use in high-speed memory decoding or data routing applications. This integrated circuit is an essential component for systems that require the conversion of a binary-coded input into one of eight mutually exclusive outputs.
Key Features
- Logic Family: 74F
- Operation Mode: 1-of-8 Decoder/Demultiplexer
- Supply Voltage Range: 4.5V to 5.5V
- High-Speed Performance: Typical propagation delay time of 4.5ns
- Power Dissipation: Low power consumption, with a typical ICC of 8mA
- Output Capability: Capable of driving 15 LSTTL loads
- Input Compatibility: Compatible with TTL logic levels

Functional Description
The NXP 74F138 decodes a three-bit Address input (A0, A1, A2) to activate one of the eight mutually exclusive outputs when the Enable inputs (E1, E2, and G) are appropriately configured. The device features three Enable inputs: two active LOW (E1, E2) and one active HIGH (G). When the Enable inputs are correctly set, the selected output will go LOW, and the remaining outputs will stay HIGH.
Applications
The versatility of the 74F138 makes it suitable for a wide range of applications such as:
- Memory chip select decoding
- Data routing and multiplexing
- Control interface for microprocessors
- Function generation
- Instrumentation and test equipment
