The ATMEGA48PA-PU is a high-performance, low-power Atmel 8-bit AVR RISC-based microcontroller from Microchip Technology. Combining 4KB ISP flash memory, 512B EEPROM, and 512B SRAM, it offers a versatile solution for a wide range of embedded applications. The device operates at a frequency of up to 20MHz and is capable of executing powerful instructions in a single clock cycle. With its advanced RISC architecture, the ATMEGA48PA-PU features 32 general-purpose working registers, fully static operation, and three flexible timer/counters with compare modes. It also includes internal and external interrupts, a serial programmable USART, a byte-oriented 2-wire serial interface, an SPI serial port, a 6-channel 10-bit A/D converter (8 channels in TQFP and QFN/MLF packages), programmable watchdog timer with internal oscillator, and five software selectable power saving modes.
The Idle mode stops the CPU while allowing the SRAM, Timer/Counters, SPI port, and interrupt system to continue functioning. The Power-down mode saves the register contents but freezes the oscillator, disabling all other chip functions until the next interrupt or hardware reset. In Power-save mode, the asynchronous timer continues to run, allowing the user to maintain a timer base while the rest of the device is sleeping. The ADC Noise Reduction mode turns off the CPU and all I/O modules except the ADC, to minimize switching noise during ADC conversions. And, finally, the Standby mode allows the crystal/resonator oscillator to run while the rest of the device is sleeping, permitting very fast start-up combined with low power consumption.
The device's calibration and self-programming capabilities are provided through an On-chip Debug system and a dedicated On-chip Bootloader code section, a true Read-While-Write Upgradeable Flash. The ATMEGA48PA-PU microcontroller is packaged in a 28-pin PDIP (Plastic Dual In-line Package) and is lead (Pb) free, with 100% matte tin leadframe plating, making it an environmentally conscious choice for electronic projects.
