The MAX697CPE is a highly integrated microprocessor (µP) supervisory circuit designed by Maxim Integrated to provide reliable monitoring and reset control for complex electronic systems. This precision device is essential for managing the power supply and maintaining the integrity of the system during power-up, operation, and power-down scenarios.

The MAX697CPE supervises the power supply voltages to ensure that the microprocessor and associated digital systems are reset upon power-up, power-down, and during any undesired brown-out conditions. This feature prevents the µP from executing code in low-voltage conditions that could potentially lead to unpredictable system behavior or data corruption.

One of the key features of the MAX697CPE is its ability to generate a reset signal when the VCC supply voltage falls below a preset threshold. This reset signal remains active for a minimum of 200ms after VCC has risen above the reset threshold, providing a stable environment for the µP to initialize. Additionally, the device offers a manual reset input, allowing for an external trigger to initiate a system reset.

The MAX697CPE also includes a watchdog timer, which is a crucial component for systems that require high reliability. This timer periodically checks for proper operation of the µP. If the µP fails to provide a "watchdog kick" within a preset timeout period, the MAX697CPE will assert a system reset, ensuring that the system can recover from a software lock-up or other faults.

Another significant aspect of the MAX697CPE is its battery backup switching for CMOS RAM, CMOS µP, or other low-power logic. The circuit automatically switches to the battery when the main power supply fails, ensuring that critical data and settings are preserved.

The MAX697CPE is available in a 16-pin dual in-line package (DIP) and is characterized for operation from -40°C to +85°C, making it suitable for a wide range of applications including computers, controllers, intelligent instruments, and critical µP power monitoring.
