The MAX691MJE from Maxim Integrated is a comprehensive microprocessor (µP) supervisory circuit designed to monitor power supplies and microprocessor activity in digital systems. It provides excellent circuit reliability and low cost by eliminating external components and adjustments when used with +5V-powered circuits.

This supervisory circuit offers several key features that make it a critical component for system management. The MAX691MJE includes a precision voltage monitor that keeps a watchful eye on the +5V power supply. It ensures that the system's voltage levels remain within acceptable thresholds, thus safeguarding the microprocessor and associated circuitry from unpredictable behavior due to power fluctuations.

Additionally, the device incorporates a microprocessor reset function that automatically resets the processor when power is applied. This reset output remains operational until the power supply has stabilized, ensuring a clean start for the CPU. The reset signal can also be manually triggered through an external pushbutton to allow for system resets without the need to cycle power.

The MAX691MJE also features a watchdog timer that monitors the microprocessor's activity. If the microprocessor fails to strobe the watchdog input within a preset time frame, the MAX691MJE assumes a system fault and issues a system reset. This built-in watchdog timer serves as a critical safeguard against system lock-up, ensuring that the microprocessor is operating as expected.

Another significant feature is the power-fail warning, which alerts the processor of impending power failure, allowing for orderly shutdown procedures to be initiated, thus preventing data loss and ensuring system integrity.

For battery-powered applications, the MAX691MJE includes a battery backup switching circuitry that automatically switches to a backup battery when the main power supply fails, ensuring uninterrupted operation.

The MAX691MJE is provided in a JEDEC-approved 16-pin ceramic DIP package, making it suitable for harsh environments and high-reliability applications. With its robust feature set, the MAX691MJE is an ideal choice for critical system monitoring in complex digital systems.
