Maxim Integrated DS1742W-120+ Nonvolatile Timekeeping RAM

The DS1742W-120+ is a full-featured, Y2K-compliant timekeeper that integrates a fully addressable 2K x 8 nonvolatile static RAM, a real-time clock/calendar, and a programmable interrupt with a power-fail write protect function. This high-quality component from Maxim Integrated is designed to provide a reliable and long-lasting solution for data and timekeeping applications that require data retention and precise timekeeping even during power loss.

Encased in a 24-pin, 300-mil EDIP package, the DS1742W-120+ is engineered to withstand harsh conditions and operate within an industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. The timekeeping function of this device offers accuracy and stability by including an onboard crystal oscillator, which ensures that time is kept with precision. The clock/calendar provides seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year information, with the added benefit of automatic leap year compensation valid up to the year 2100.

The nonvolatile SRAM offers 2KB of storage, ensuring that critical data is preserved without the need for an external battery. The unique feature of the DS1742W-120+ is its power-fail write protection, which guarantees that when the supply voltage drops below a certain threshold, all writes to the memory are inhibited, thereby protecting the existing data from corruption. This feature, along with the integrated lithium energy source, ensures data retention and clock operation for over 10 years in the absence of external power.

Furthermore, the DS1742W-120+ includes a programmable interrupt output which can be configured to serve as an alarm interrupt or as a periodic interrupt, providing a versatile means for managing power-critical events or scheduling tasks in embedded systems. The device is also fully accessible in the same manner as a conventional SRAM, making it easy to integrate into existing systems without the need for additional software overhead.
