The 74HC161N is a presettable synchronous 4-bit binary counter which features an internal look-ahead carry. Synchronous operation is provided by having all flip-flops clocked simultaneously on the positive-going edge of the clock (CP). The device can be cleared at any time by the asynchronous master reset input (MR); it also has two asynchronous set/reset inputs (PE, TE).
The counter advances on the edge of the clock while the clock enable signal (CE) is held low. The carry look-ahead circuitry provides for cascading counters for n-bit synchronous applications without additional gating. When the clock enable (CE) and the load (LD) inputs are both low, the counter loads the 4-bit data set up at the data inputs (D0 to D3).
