The MC74HC595D consists of an 8-bit shift register and an 8-bit output latch with three-state outputs. Data is serially shifted into the shift register on the positive-going edge of the shift register clock (SHCP). The data is then transferred to the output latch on the positive-going edge of the latch clock (STCP). The outputs can be enabled or disabled using the output enable (OE) input. A direct clear (CLR) input allows for asynchronous clearing of the shift register. The device operates from a supply voltage of 2V to 6V and is compatible with standard TTL logic levels. It is commonly available in a surface mount package.
